If the law-abiding public has been denied access to the area, then why is there still, a virtual vacuum of any supervision going on in an area? This is the same area, the "so called environmental reports have claimed is "too sensitive" for a trail system, despite the trail's existence being documented way back to the 1970's. How many times must we let this place get trashed? The miles of irrigation lines that now intertwine the Scrub Oak will take a considerable amount of time and money to remove and will result in the unavoidable destruction of more habitat. The "La Brea fire" burned over 75,000 acres in Santa Barbara County. Authorities say that the recent outbreak of California wildfires started in the cooking area of an illegal marijuana farm run by Mexican drug lords. A farm of this size could hold about 400 plants, which is at least 100 pounds of Marijuana per harvest, or about $640,000 dollars.Ī gasoline powered water pump is used to irrigate the plants and is intended to be operated without someone present and if so much as a spark came out of it's exhaust, it could start a fire that could burn down the entire preserve not to mention surrounding homes and businesses. Upon my one of my patrols of the area, I discovered a new, extremely extensive, illegal marijuana farming operation that is being set up right now. Now I come to you to report that since its closure, the criminals have reclaimed this area. I went over this area my self with a fine toothcomb and when we were done it was in "pristine" condition. This trash was left behind after years if not decades of migrant workers living, washing, defecating and even hunting. Now on April 18(less then 5 months ago), which happened to be Earth Day and my birthday, I with Ranger Gina Washington led over 100 volunteers and hiked about 8 tons or 60 yards of trash out of this area.

These criminal activities include: Off road vehicles, the dumping of trash, hazardous substances dangerous bonfires. One that encouraged enough presence of responsible trail users to thwart illegal HIGH impact destruction to the sensitive habitat that has routinely occurred in the area. When we originally proposed a "sensible" trail plan for the Del Mar Mesa/Deer Canyon area, my original point was that for the benefit of the preserve the area needed an approved trail plan.
